or... How to install TreadMarks Mods...
those player created mods for the tank game,
TreadMarks, by LongBow Digital Arts.

notes:
modifications = mods and TreadMarks = TM

mods can be flags, tanks, weapons, or maps.

««««««««««««««««««««« ±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±± »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

A Brief Explanation ...

All mods go in one folder: AddOns

1) download desired mods
2) unzip mods [[ you should now have a folder called "AddOns" ]]
3) copy the "AddOns" folder into the TreadMarks program folder
4) you are done
5) start TreadMarks and the mods will appear in your game
6) i have repeated this, at the bottom of the page, but with pictures

««««««««««««««««««««« ±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±± »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»

Now, a long-winded explanation ...

[[ First Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

You need to know the location on your hard drive where TreadMarks was installed.

Default location is
C:\Program Files\Tread Marks 1.5

If you bought TreadMarks when it was distributed by eGames, this is the default install path:
C:\Program Files\eGames\Treadmarks\Game

But since you can install TreadMarks any where, you need to find this path location.

This is typically what you will find in the TM root folder:

AddOns   < DIR >
art         < DIR >
entities   < DIR >
Local     < DIR >
Maps     < DIR >
objects   < DIR >
sound    < DIR >
scores   < DIR >
Uninstal.exe
config.cfg
dedicated.cfg
fast.cfg
godlypc.cfg
License.txt
Mss32.dll
normal.cfg
pretty.cfg
TM.exe
TMVoodoo.exe
zlib.dll
TreadMarks.exe
Changes.txt
Server Commands.txt
BanList.txt

If there is no folder called AddOns, that's ok, just create a new folder called AddOns.

The top folder, AddOns, is where all mods go.

[[ Second Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

Go download some mods!!
And do it now for all that is good and holy!!

Coax has many many links to different sites:
http://www.geocities.com/coaxs/

other possibilities:
http://www.tbhccs.com/treadmarks/tm-downloads-index.html
http://www.hallsted.us/treadmarks-downloads/index.html
http://www.hallsted.net/tm-homage-harmless.html

The official home of TreadMarks:
http://www.treadmarks.com/
The official forum for TreadMarks:
http://www.ldagames.com/forums/index.php

Shop around and follow links, there are many other sites
out there that offer TreadMarks mods for download.

[[ Third Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

Organize your TM mods!!

Create folders and subfolders for all of your mods.
[[ just a gentle suggestion is all ]]

C:\downloads

C:\downloads\TM mods

C:\downloads\TM mods\flags

C:\downloads\TM mods\maps
C:\downloads\TM mods\maps\Clan
C:\downloads\TM mods\maps\CTF
C:\downloads\TM mods\maps\DM
C:\downloads\TM mods\maps\Race
C:\downloads\TM mods\maps\Storm

C:\downloads\TM mods\tanks
C:\downloads\TM mods\tanks\liquid
C:\downloads\TM mods\tanks\steel

C:\downloads\TM mods\weapons
C:\downloads\TM mods\weapons\client
C:\downloads\TM mods\weapons\SSO

C:\downloads\TM mods\Internet Servers

And inside of these main folders, you should have a seperate folder for each mod you download.

Why?!?!?
Well, backups are always a good idea. Also, all mods go into one folder, AddOns.
There are hundreds of mods. If you don't like a mod, it can be hard to sort through all of the mods that are in the AddOns folder and delete the one mod you are looking for. It is much easier to just delete the AddOns folder, re-create it, and put back into the AddOns folder, only the mods you want.

[[ Fourth Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

The AddOns folder has its own directory structure:
This is a screenshot of a possible AddOns folder directory structure:

TM addons folder structure

When you download a mod, the mod's author will have done all of the work for you. The proper directory structure is already there; all that you need to do is copy and paste.

A different way of stating the same idea...

Say that you download a mod: TM-mod-awesome-weapon.zip
When you unzip TM-mod-awesome-weapon.zip, all that you should see is a folder called AddOns. The mod author will have created the proper directory structure, and placed the necessary files in all of the correct folders. All that you need to do is copy the AddOns folder into your root TreadMarks directory, and you are done. TreadMarks will now see and use any and all mods that you have placed into the AddOns folder.

one cautionary note here, which I have done before...
just be careful not to have a 2nd AddOns folder inside of the primary AddOns folder ...
any mods inside of the 2nd AddOns folder, accidently inside of the primary AddOns folder will be ignored by the game. There can be only one AddOns folder, found in the root TM directory.

[[ Fifth Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

Most all of these mods, are for single player games, on your computer.
You will see some mods labeled SSO, meaning Server Side Only.
You can install SSO mods and play them locally on your computer in single player format.
Again, SSO mods are placed inside of the AddOns folder, so the game will see and use them just fine.

[[ Sixth Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

Playing TreadMarks over the internet...

Except for the TM server, hosted by LongBow Digital Arts, all of the TreadMarks internet game servers are hosted by individuals on their home computers, most likely on a DSL or cable internet connection.

Most all of these TM internet game servers have mods added to them. In order to play on an individual's game server, you will need to go find and download the mods that are specific to that server.

When you are at the "Join a Multi-Player Game" screen inside of the game, clicking on a particular server should reveal details about what might be needed to play on that server. The description displayed should tell you how to do this. This information is located in both the "info" area and the "web" area of that screen.

three examples are here :

robos server
Here, at Robo's server, you need to go to http://www.tbhccs.com/treadmarks/tm-clan-maps/aa-tm-clan-maps-index.html and download 10.2MB of modded maps, these are the clan maps. Clan maps are stock maps that have been modded to include many extra weapons' spawn points. The weapons and tanks on this server are "Std" which means Standard. Another word for standard is "stock", which means that the weapons and tanks used on this server are the "standard" or "stock" or "default" weapons and tanks that are included with the game when you first install TreadMarks. Mast. Flags means the master flag pack. Many people have created their own tank flags for TreadMarks. These can all be found in the master flag pack. He ran out of room, only so much information can be included in the "info" and "web" area. The master flag pack can be viewed and downloaded here.

armageddon server
Here, at the Armageddon server, all mods are SSO, so no download is needed to play on this server. However, if you are curioius, more information about this TM game server can be found at the www address that is provided in the "web" portion... http://treadmarks.boomstickjoes.com/

hallsted server
For the hallsted i am game server, you need to go to http://www.hallsted.net/ to get the appropriate mod download. Evidently, it must be obvious from the web page what is needed to be downloaded.

While joining an internet game server...
if you get a map load error, then you do not have the specific map mod that a person has added to their server. If you see ghost tanks or ghost weapons, or if you don't see certain tanks or weapons ( ie. you only see a flag, that should be on a tank, floating around ) ( ie. you are firing an invisible weapon, or weapon points seem empty ) then you need to go download the server mod pack that is specific to the TM game server that you are trying to play.

Once you get and install the server mod pack for the server you want to play on, the map load errors will be gone, and the ghost tanks and invisible weapons will now show up.

You will see some mods labeled SSO, meaning Server Side Only.
If a person has installed SSO mods on their game server, then you do NOT need to download and install any mods to play on their internet game server. When you attach to this type of game server, the message you see... "syncing entity x of xxx" means that the SSO mods are being temporarily loaded while you play on that SSO server, and will remain loaded while you are attached to that server. Once you quit the SSO server, the SSO mods will be unloaded.

[[ Seventh Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

As of this writing, April 17th, 2004:
The current version of TreadMarks is version 1.6
The original version of TreadMarks is version 1.0.1

You need version 1.6 to play on the internet.
I still play version 1.0.1 locally on my computer for single games.

All of the mods will work with both versions of TreadMarks, v1.0.1 and v1.6

[[ Eighth Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

I suppose a recap here is appropriate...

All mods go in one folder: AddOns

1) download desired mods

2) unzip mods [[ you should now have a folder called "AddOns" ]]

final unzip result

3) copy the "AddOns" folder into the TreadMarks program folder

copy addons folder

4) you are done

5) start TreadMarks and the mods will appear in your game

6) i have repeated this brief explanation at the top of the page

[[ Ninth Note ]] §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§ §§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

Enjoy a great game!!!

What follows is from a ReadMe.txt file that is found
in many of the TM mod files:
*********************************************************

To UnZip this Tread Marks mod:

1. In the main WinZip window, press Ctl+A to selected all files in the
ZIP archive. You should see all of the files become selected
   (i.e., they'll all turn blue).

2. Click on the Extract button in WinZip (or press Shift+E). This will
display a new window titled Extract.

3. In the Extract window 'files' dialog, make sure that 'Selected files'
or 'All files' is checked. You want to extract all files, and in step
   1 we selected all files.

4. In the Extract window, make sure that the 'Use folder names' option is
checked (this option is located in the lower-left corner of WinZip's
Extract window). This is required, as it is the only way that the
unzipped files will end up in the proper Tread Marks folders.

5. Specify the location of where to unzip the files. In the case of this
ZIP archive, you want to specify the root Tread Marks directory. Why
the root directory? Because we've stored 'Addons' as the prefix
directory to all files in the ZIP archive; thus, all files will end up
in Tread Marks' Addons folder. You may specify this location by either
typing it in or by pointing to it in the 'Folders/drives:' dialog. For
example, if you owned Tread Marks version 1.5, then in the 'Extract
to:' dialog, type 'C:\Program Files\Tread Marks 1.5\' (if you have Tread
Marks installed on a different letter drive, specify that drive instead
   of C:).

6. Finally, click on the Extract button (or simply press the enter key).

7. That's it!

This ZIP file was automatically generated in WinZip using Tread Marks
program ENTegrety.

The ENTegrety program was written by clan Black Widow Lance for the Tread
Marks community. If you would like a copy of ENTegrety, please visit
